My surgery is scheduled for Wed, October 26th at 8:15 am. I'm not sure how long it will take, but the surgery center wants me to promise that I'll have someone with me for the rest of the day since I'll be loopy on painkillers. This is a real shot in the dark, but is there anyone in the Alpharetta or Atlanta area who would be home during that day who might be able and willing to have a genuine couch potato on their couch for that afternoon? ACat seriously can't get more time off - he's already borrowing vacation time from next year from his job to go to OVFF and they politely made it clear that that's a one time favor they're doing for him.

Personally, I think I would be ok if he got me set up on the couch at home with pills, water, cellphone for emergencies, and tv remote before heading back to work - he's only five to ten minutes down the road. But the doctors seem pretty set about this, and while I may wind up just smiling nicely at them and telling them what they want to hear, I thought I'd ask around first.

I wish I had a teleporter, Joshua and I would just come by and entertain you.

I would love that! :) Since mine's in the shop and I'm pretty sure yours isn't working just now either, simply give him and Wolf a hug for me? And have a great big one for yourself!

Let me check with Aaron; he teaches from 11-12 on Wednedays, but after that he's usually pretty flexible, and often works from home. I'll see if he has any meetings or office hours that afternoon; if not, you may be in business.

That's a definite possibility! Let me talk to ACat who has to be the poor shlub who has to get me from the doctor's to whereever I vegitate for the rest of the day, and see if it works better for me to vegitate with you guys or with Bedlamhouse and family, since they also offered. Either way, I am immensely grateful for the offer. I hope you folks will let me cook you dinner when I'm back to competence again.

I work from home when I'm in town, so there is someone here all day if you don't mind random dog energy bursts. Let me know.

Do you know for sure you'll be in town? I thought that was often short notice for you... but if so, that's a very generous offer and much appreciated. Like I said for Joyce above, I'll check with ACat on which is easier for him, since he's the one has to bring me from the doctor's office to whereever I do my potato imitation for the day. *bearhug* to all of you, and I am immensely grateful, regardless.

Barring some emergency I expect to be in town that week.

Thank you greatly, but I'm going to take Aaron's offer since it lets me collapse in the comfort of my own home. :) I hope you all are doing well - it's been ages since I've seen any of you.

Obviously it would be a bit difficult for me to make it there. However, please DO NOT attempt to stay home by yourself. Regardless of how well you think you handle pain killers. As one with a fairly recent similar experience, let me assure you that you will feel far better/safer/more competent than you really are. Greg and Faeryn can vouch for this.

*hugs*

I know you're right... and it looks like I won't need to. I know that's far from ideal, but if the option was between doing that and postponing the surgery, please believe I would go with that. (I'd take every precaution I could think of ahead of time for dealing with problems, including having ACat premeasure individual doses, and call me when it was time to take them, for instance.)

Can I ask what your recent experience was?

Also, if my recent email offended, I apologize and I hope you'll accept the apology.

Even though you'll be having local, not general anesthesia (I assume), I definitely second
kyttn's caution. Sometimes the docs know what they're doing. :)

Hmmm. I just noticed that all your Chessies are fading out and back in in synch with each other.
Cool!

Sorry to take so long to get back to you - I'm not ignoring you, I promise!

Recently I had a bunch of teeth issues dealt with, mostly under sedation. I was sent home afterwards and barely remember most of the day. I do remember needing to walk from the couch to the bathroom, and being almost completely unable to walk down the hall without pushing against the walls - even though I thought I was walking straight, the walls kept moving closer to me. Not a good scene.

Another episode since then involved me taking meds for pain and sleep the night before I had to go to work, being sick a good deal of the night, and then sending Faeryn in to work for me. I thought she had to leave at lunch-time, so I drove myself into work. My boss took one look, and was horrified. She tells me my speech was slurred (though I couldn't tell), I was listing to one side as I walked (again, I had no clue), and I was incredibly pale. She made Faeryn drive me home. When I looked in the bathroom mirror later, I did see why she had been shocked at my appearance, but I had really thought I was pretty much fine when I drove in.

*bearhug* Ok, definitely will not drive while looped - but then, I wasn't planning to. I can deal with leaning on walls in my own home, but that makes it all the better that I WILL be in my own home, thanks to Aaron's very kind offer. I'm so glad you didn't have anything catastrophic happen while your judgement was impaired.

I don't actually teach that day (I teach Monday and Friday) and have no meetings. I can keep the 26th clear - I could pick you up from the hospital, drop you and me off at your apt., and bring the laptop with me to get work done...

My job is stressful but it's infinitely flexible.

Whew.... are you sure about ALL that? I have to be there at 6:45, which is earlier than any sane human being should have to be seen in public in my opinion. If you'd even be willing to pick me up (exact time unknown) and let me potato in your company at our place, that would be lovely. I admit, I have a preference for collapsing in my own home over someone else's if it's all the same to you.

Heh, must already be drugged - I completely misread that. Yes, if you could pick me up there that would be great, I would completely appreciate that.

I'll try and remember to send you a proper email when I get home, but to make a long story short, the surgery is cancelled for the 26th. I still want to treat you two to dinner or something asap, though, if you're willing. We can make a part of it - I'll make a pinata in the shape of an insurance adjuster and we can whack the hell out of it. Whadaya say?

It looks like you're pretty well covered, if I'm reading comments right. If not, I can lean on ask my dad, who lives in Alpharetta and will be home. Email me at victor(period)stevko(at)comcast(period)net if you need anything.

Yep, it's me. We're doing OK, though it's just settled in to rain all week. Like Oregon, but without the skiing and wine.

I'm curious how you happened to see my post on this? I'm not on your friends list, so I suppose someone must have pointed you at it? (Regardless, I really do appreciate the offer. I'm not sure if your dad would have, but I do!)

Well, I use an RSS aggregator for reading, so my friends list isn't really up-to-date. I suppose I ought to do something about that in my copious free time.
