Boskone weekend

*happysigh* You know, I don't think I ever had quite so much fun at a con that I saw so little of.
Friday morning
autographedcat and I got up early so
telynor could give us a ride to the airport. This was not too hard for me - I'd been twitchy and excited about going to Boskone all week, and I was wide awake well before I needed to be! So we got everything all packed up and out the door and out to the airport in good time. The flight was choppy, but we got to Boston only about a half hour late, with all the appropriate luggage intact, so all was good.
We caught a taxi to the hotel and checked in (very nice view from the 25th floor!) then went out to Legal Seafood for lunch with
tigerbright. MMMMmmmm, clam chowder! She had things she needed to do, so we went back to the hotel and enjoyed the view and the relaxation. Eventually,
maedbh7 called to say she was almost to the hotel, so ACat and I went for a really DECADENT array of desserts with her at a place called Finale, then we all went wandering to find something a little more substantial for an actual dinner. Nothing really presented itself and it was COLD out, so we eventually just went back to the hotel and got pretty good room service while lounging around and having a marvelous time in each other's company. All I'll say is she's a fascinating, adorable and snuggly person, and I think we've resolved a mutual "Well, I'll wait and see what she really thinks first" dilemma that neither of us quite realized was there. I certainly like how it resolved. :) (This is also the first time I've been on a three person date - I don't know that that's quite how it was planned on any side, but that's what it turned out to be. Extra fun!)
Saturday was a delicious breakfast at a local diner (Really Good Food turned out to be a theme for this weekend), a trip to see the dealers and a very small bit of the art show, a very interesting Silverlock panel, a nap (for me - when I couldn't keep my eyes open in the panel, I gave up and went for a nap afterwards while ACat went to lunch with Tigerbright), then a bit of another panel when I tried to meet up with ACat afterwards. The panel was something about the tipping point, and the idea was that approximately 150 people made up an effective sociological unit for accomplishing things. At least, I think that was the idea - it appeared that about that many had tried to cram into the room, and I have this unfortunate oxygen addiction, so I caught ACat's eye and went back out to wait in the hall.
Soon after that, we met up with Tigerbright and
teddywolf and went to get dinner at John Harvard's. The food was quite good, but they took long enough with complications in the check that I had concerns on whether they'd lost my damn debit card. Anyhow, we eventually got out of there and were only 10 minutes or so late for the official start of the Da Vinci's Notebook concert. This effectively meant we had to be seated as two separate couples, and also that I had to stand up every time the waitress needed to reach the corner tables, but the concert itself was absolutely outstanding. They're great recorded, but they had so damn much FUN up on stage that the whole sold out place was in hysterics! It was awesome, and by the time we left my hands hurt from clapping, and my head from laughing, and I'd go again in a heartbeat. We found out later that apparently something like a dozen people that one or another or all of us knew had gone to the second show instead of the first, which we were at - that kinda was too bad, but considering we were late, if they'd been at our showing we'd have probably missed them anyhow. After that, it was Herrell's Ice Cream (I think) for dessert, then back to the hotel. I believe Teddywolf went off to exercise his Talent at gaming and I went off to the Hymnal filk sing. (Hell, it was just about the only place and time where I KNEW I'd be able to find some of the local friends I most wanted to see!) Considering how often I miss out on the filking even at filk cons, I patted myself on the back a touch for it. *G* ACat eventually came and found me, so I also got to the open filking eventually - I enjoy the hymnals, but after an hour or so I'm in the mood for more varied stuff. I was also tickled when
ladyat played bodhran (sp?) so ACat could do his latest song. It still has no title, but it's a Return of the King filk to the tune of Least of My Kind. (He gives me credit as coauthor, but believe me, the good bits are all his!) Anyhow, it went over really well and surprised the hell out of me since he'd forgotten the printout of the lyrics at home, and he reconstructed the whole thing on paper by memory. (He also managed to startle and impress someone (I think
drsnark?) who he borrowed a pen from and who thought he was writing it on the spot, not recreating it!) It was an open question as to whether Tigerbright would be staying with us overnight, but she opted to go home to sleep eventually.
Sunday morning we woke fairly early again and went for another breakfast at the diner (second meal there that weekend for me, third for ACat - the waitress was suitably impressed when we told her! *G*) which was good, though not as scrumptious as the last one. We very efficiently packed up first, so once breakfast was done we checked out in good time and lugged our luggage to see Tigerbright and Ladybear running a filk circle in the kids' area. That was actually lots of fun, and we got some music in too. Some of the kids wandered off, one adorable little girl started dancing, and on the whole I think it was a success. I tried doing my one reliable offbook song (The Vacuum Cleaner Song) but couldn't cut through the kids' chatter with just my voice - still, I sang along on the other songs and had a good time. Ladybear's a lovely lady, a grand performer, and a great character, and it seemed to be a mutual good impression all around. :) It's always a goodness to make more friends.
We had to clear out to make space for the incoming magic act, but that was fine. We really needed to stash the luggage in the car anyhow, so that was done, then we headed to Fire and Ice for Tigerbright's birthday lunch. Well, brunch - yum! We didn't sic the resturaunt staff on her, but a few of us did throw a few verses of the Mongolian Birthday Dirge at her, and again it was good food and good fun. Unfortunately, the level of noise and the difficulty sorting it out eventually made my brain do it's cute little short circuit and I really needed to get out to some quiet - I was a little abrupt about it, and I hope I didn't offend anyone. We four left the other half of the party behind and went off to the dead dog filking through the biting wind. That was a lot of fun - lots of good stuff, and lots of stuff that we tend not to hear down in the GA area.
Eventually it was time to go, and we did. Due to space limits in the car, the luggage got the back seat, Teddywolf and I got the front seats, and ACat and Tigerbright got to take the T. They beat us home since we stopped at Trader Joe's but that was more than worthwhile. I am slowly and steadily getting it through to all levels of my brain that Teddywolf, who I knew back in college but had a long period of "out of touch" with has changed a lot, and so have I. It's like making a new friendship with a different person who happens to have memories of a lot of the same people I do from waaaaay back. :) I think I like the current versions of both of us a lot better, though! (A quote I've always liked from Spider Robinson's Antimony - "'What man can compete with his younger self?' 'Any man who has grown as he aged,' she said with certainty.")
We eventually made it back triumphantly bearing the spoils of the hunt - chicken, cider, ice cream, chocolate and some other things I don't recall.
browngirl was there for lots of hugs and happy greetings, and
drsnark came by shortly after and much music and laughter was made while Teddywolf did his usual kitchen magic. Dinner was excellent (did I mention Really Good Food was our vacation theme?). Afterwards more music and socializing but I was tired and struggling not to yawn just about the time Teddywolf announced that we'd all had fun but it was time for those not sleeping there to go home. :) He'd already run it by me, and I had thought by everyone else, but ACat was apparently pleasantly surprised - since ACat and Tigerbright are very long distance sweeties (and very, VERY recent sweeties - like, as of this weekend) they were awarded the master bedroom and Teddywolf and I took the fold out couch. This actually worked out really well, although I have no idea how much sleep anyone got. TWolf and I spend a few hours talking and snuggling a bit, along with a couple cute teddybears. It was a lot of "remember when" and "whatever happened to so-and-so" and trading stories of life since college, and even stuff from before college we'd just never known about eachother. On the whole, a slumber party. *G* It certainly helped build a friendship based on Now instead of Then, and that's good. Some stuff is just easier to talk about at 2 am in the dark.
Next morning I woke up before almost anyone in the house (I vaguely remember hearing the voice of their housemate at some point, but I think he was leaving) and finished the book I was reading while TWolf got some more sleep. Eventually Tigerbright came out smiling and wakeful, so I went and socialized with her and ACat in the bedroom - he was getting his LJ fix, sorely deprived since the hotel's TV websystem browser was VERY limited in dealing with LJ. Browngirl eventually came in and chatted too, and it was a nice quiet morning. TWolf is selfevidently NOT a morning person, but he eventually reached consciousness and we all ate oatmeal and popovers and were very low key. I packed and read the latest Lois McMasters Bujold story while most of the household played Munchkin and Tigerbright snoozed in front of the TV. Then, unfortunately, it was time to go to the airport.
Browngirl and Tigerbright hugged us and sent us on our way with TWolf who got us to the airport in lots of time. A flurry of hugs and goodbyes all around and we went in to find that they'd postponed our flight by over an hour and a half. *sigh* We eventually got into the plane and off the ground and back to Atlanta, where the incomparable Telynor picked us up again with her son. We all went to dinner at IHOP, grinned over the very INTERESTING waitress, went back to our home, I passed on various gifts to them, and then we semi-politely kicked them out so we could go to sleep.
On the whole, a really outstanding weekend. I wanna do it again!

PS: That was a darned good LOTR filk.. and I bet you contributed more than you realize. There's a reason "All Sides Snow" is one of my favorite parodies. You've got a very deft touch.

Date: 2004-02-23 02:51 pm (UTC)To ACat- I know exactly what you mean about the "prompting" effect in collaboration..I have a half-songwriting-credit for which I think *none* of my actual suggestions made it into the song.. but I kept suggesting interpretations which the original author (who had solicited a collaborator because he was stuck) said, "no, that's not it.." but he did finish the song as a result.
