To ACat- I know exactly what you mean about the "prompting" effect in collaboration..I have a half-songwriting-credit for which I think *none* of my actual suggestions made it into the song.. but I kept suggesting interpretations which the original author (who had solicited a collaborator because he was stuck) said, "no, that's not it.." but he did finish the song as a result.
