I have to say, I have a number of friends who deal with chronic pain without any real expectation that it can be made to go away. I have new appreciation for you all.

I've had chronic pain in my right shoulder since sometime the middle of February. I assumed at first it was a pulled muscle and ignored it for quite a while, and it got slowly worse. Eventually I got to a doctor, who prescribed anti-inflammatories, ice packs, painkillers and some exercises. This didn't really help much at all - partly because I did some stupid stuff that probably hurt it worse. Anyhow, the doctor eventually sent me to a specialist, and yesterday I got a cortisone shot. Wow... today I'm nearly pain free for the first time in two and a half months, and I'm realizing just how much it was affecting my personality and attitude. I really thought I was doing well with it, and I'm thinking now I owe some apologies, especially to ACat but to some others as well. For those of you who deal with this long term, you have my profound respect and every hope that you'll find relief. If a cortisone shot is something they offer you, I can only say it worked a miracle for me.

sometimes you need to do something drastic like that to get the pain to go away long enough to fix the problem. but please do try to figure out what can be a more long-term solution.

after spending something like 15-20 years with varrying amounts of back pain, i finally sought help from a chiropractor. that helped to a point, but it didn't seem to be making radical progress. i was also getting massages regularly, but those didn't seem to be making a significant dent in it either. when i told this to my doctor, he offered me personal training instead of regular adjustments. this has really been the key...my back is now strong enough to do what i need it to do on a daily basis. for the first time in 20 years i don't feel in constant need of a back massage. i still get adjusted semi-regularly, but i am significantly more healthy overall.
