If someone's intending this as serious propaganda rather than a spoof, I think they've seriously miscalculated. Personally, I took it as a sacreligious sort of joke, poking fun at that sort of propaganda.
Okay, okay, satire... but I *have* had close encounters with fundamentalist propaganda which I thought was similarly over-the-top, yet the proponent was taking completely seriously. :(
That would have something to do with whether you saw it as fundamentalist propaganda or satire, wouldn't it? Not being a fan of either character, I'm not really sure what to make of it.
BTW, has anyone seen the short film Starsky & Jesus? Or was it Jesus & Hutch? Now that was scary, although Chosen One thought it was hilarious.
Jesus and Hutch, I think - and if it's the one I saw (very short, like seven minutes? in the format of a trailer, essentially?) I thought it was very funny too!
Yep, Jesus & Hutch (2000). It was really short (fortunately? :). Directed and written by Paul Harrison. "Jesus is back. And this time He's fighting crime with his trusted partner, Hutch." It starred Tate Donovan as Hutch and Eric Stoltz as Jesus.
Maybe if I had had any interest in the original, it might have been funny. Apparently, they reenacted a number of famous scenes from the original. Being who I am, though, the scene with Jesus pointing a gun at someone, saying "I love you, man." and then blowing the guy away was just a bit too close to reality for my (in its own way) warped sense of humor.
