Gafilked!

It was the best of weekends, it was the suckiest of Mondays. I haven't even made a token attempt at catching up on LJ yet, but I know if I don't do this now it just won't get done - and if you don't report on your own damn con, whose con should you report on?? (Is there anything from the weekend LJs that I really should know about? Anyone?)

GAfilk weekend! For me, it's a wonderful break from year end madness. The drawback is that it's also during the time-off blackout for just that reason, so just like last year I missed most of Friday. I am told the opening ceremonies were sufficiently sumptious, and the My Filk game was a lot of fun. I know that when I did show up late that evening ACat was still spiffed up in his Master of Ceremonies tuxedo (this year with sneakers and purple cordoroy shirt, for a real fannish touch!) and he looked maaaaahvelous, dahling. It felt like sinking into a warm hot tub full of good friends - I was warmly greeted and hugged all around. There were big holes from missing people - [livejournal.com profile] telynor and [livejournal.com profile] filkerdave and [livejournal.com profile] cflute especially - but every year, it feels like coming home. I didn't stay up terribly late, but I almost never do, so I eventually went up to bed very happy.

Saturday I woke up all too early - I guess my body's too used to waking up at six thirty in the morning even when it doesn't NEED to, dammit. After about an hour I gave up and got up, showered and read and then carried ACat off to breakfast when he woke too. We had to run a few errands that morning, but it's a relaxacon and we got back in the early afternoon, didn't miss too much. Actually, I didn't get to too much of the filking, considering it's a filk con. My best fun this weekend was talking with people and just hanging out, and I got a lot of that. I did catch some of the concert from Teri and the Space Pirates - lots of fun from our toastmistress, [livejournal.com profile] teri945! I kind of wandered in and out, though. I saw several large chunks of the Two by Ten sets, and got a good run through the dealers room. Then the real highlight of the con came - the banquet!

Yeah, I know - you think con banquet and you usually think dull food, long speeches, and a trapped audience in order to make the hotel happy. Mind you, I do still go to some of them and even enjoy them, but this is a hippogryph of a different color. *WE* have the Gafilk House Band. Over the last few years this has evolved into an incredibly good jazz band. This year it included [livejournal.com profile] jodimuse for vocals, [livejournal.com profile] quadrivium on keyboard and vocals, [livejournal.com profile] surrdave on trumpet, [livejournal.com profile] weirdsister also doing vocals, [livejournal.com profile] kiltedwitch on bass, and [livejournal.com profile] siliconchef on drums. Just like last year, they had the whole crowd in their hands, and most up and dancing. I'm a classic "I don't dance, don't ask me", but I danced a couple really slow easy ones with ACat, and [livejournal.com profile] mnemex risked his toes and ankles and such to try and teach me a few steps. I also wound up sitting between [livejournal.com profile] happyfunpaul and Wes (don't *think* he has an LJ) so I had good company to entertain and flirt with me back at the table while ACat danced with everyone he could until he was ready to collapse in a puddle! The band was hot, music was fantastic, the dancing was great, and I heard from any number of people then and later just how much mmmmmmm good there was in watching even for those who weren't dancing. In the words of one anonymous friend, "Is there anyone here who DOESN'T have a thing for Mary?" *G* I will simply say, I think everyone needed a cold shower by the end of that set, whether they'd been dancing or not.

After that, most everyone went off to the GoH concert with Kathleen (who I don't believe has an LJ, anyone know differently?) which was followed by the interfilk auction. I'd usually be all over both of those, but [livejournal.com profile] nrivkis had issued an open invite to her birthday party for Saturday night, and I didn't want to miss that. Unfortunately, when I tracked her down she said she was going to just forget about it since she hadn't had a chance to get any booze. I shrugged and pointed out that I'd really been thinking more of taking her to the bar and getting her drunk if she was up for it. She smiled and accepted - and then nursed two glasses of merlot for the next four hours or so. *G* On the other hand, a fair selection of good company drifted by and joined us out on the couches by the bar, at varoius times including (but not limited to - I'm sorry I don't remember who all was there over the next few hours, I was tipsy!) Mnemex, [livejournal.com profile] poltr1, Ori and his small son, [livejournal.com profile] zencuppa and ACat. It was a great time, and should be a tradition!

I got to bed a bit earlier than the night before, but woke up just as early. Rather than wake ACat up again trying to get enough light to read, I went on down for breakfast and found the Holiday Inn had apparently been invaded overnight. A good chunk of the US Army had stayed the night before heading on to the airport, and the line for the buffet was out the door. I eventually gave up and got bread and peanut butter from the con suite and read a while. Eventually I went back up and woke ACat and got some snuggles before we headed back down. We hit the dealers' room again and added to our tshirt collection. (My favorite - "Intelligence is the ultimate aphrodesiac")

At two it was time for closing ceremonies so we went and did the usual thing, including the ritual hurling of the concom's badges and everyone singing Strangers No More. This was my first official year as treasurer, so now that the relaxacon was over it was (naturally) time for me to undo all my relaxation and try to balance the receipts and the cashbox. Gahhhhhh..... Another Fucking Learning Experience. Anyhow, after that ACat and I took Quadrivium out for dinner and discussion, then back for open filking and lots more socialization and eventually ACat and I took our houseguest, Happyfunpaul, on home. I got to hang out and enjoy the company, then the two of them stayed up to absurd hours of the morning while I got sleep for work today.

Today sucked. Work after a con always sucks, but this really sucked. Still - I started this entry planning on bitching about work. I don't really feel like it any more. I came home to a pile of hugs from my loving husband, a lovely, unexpected phonecall from a very sweet sweetie, and a very ah, warming email from a sweetie-in-the-making. *EG* The weekend was good, very good. I'd rather hang onto that.

Is there anyone anywhere who knows her who doesn't have a thing for Mary? I don't think so.

Heh, I've heard that question myself. Apparently, it's me. Nice lady, lovely musician, but apparently I am the only one whose hormones are proof from carbonation there.

Mind you, there were OTHER causes there to make me think about cool showers, yes. Lovely night, lovely band, just wonderful.

Absolutely, they were really amazing all around.

I sympathize strongly on the Monday thing. Very strongly. Omigosh! I just realized I haven't done tomorrow's syllabus yet! (Today's syllabus did not happen because the school copier was broken down which was just as well because I was running late after getting a new tire when the old one blew out 15 miles from home.)

Like you though, I'd much rather focus on how exceptionally wonderful the company was this past weekend. I am so very very happy we got to spend time together Sunday evening before I left! *big hugs!*

Absolutely, that was one of the high points in the weekend for me - though I must say, there were an awful lot of really high points this weekend!

Sorry I missed the banquet. It wasn't in my budget. :-(

'Twas good to see you and ACat again! *hugs*

Well, you'll just have to get it next year. Seriously, food aside - they were worth the $25 for just the entertainment. (In my utterly unbiased opinion, of course!) And I know you've heard this before, but you really look nothing like your icon! I'm glad you showed up for breakfast, and for the party!

Yeah, the icon picture is old; circa 1997-98. It was part of a series of still images for a client who had an SGI O2 and a camera. He wanted to do VTC (video teleconferencing) on it, but we lacked the necessary bandwith.

I should post the series of images in a future LJ entry.

BTW, you look nothing like your icon, either. :)

And if I'm there next year (hope hope), I should have plenty of dancing partners! Provided I have enough spoons left in the day at that time. :)

Maybe. You guys saw madfilkentist's 1/6 post about LJ being under new manglement?

I haven't seen his post, but the news about new management was announced several days before the weekend. Does he have new information?

Maybe. The post was mostly a warning to read the new Terms Of Service very carefully before agreeing.
"Paranoia is a virtue". It has a link to the announcement, and a Comment by tigerbright with a link to,
among other related stuff, a comparison of the old and new TOS agreements. I don't know how to put a
link to these in my Comment, so the following may not work, but...

Firefly's the best. Swipe it if you want - just attribute it the same way I've got it listed on my list. For that matter, I've got a button up for the folks who made all my firefly icons - damn good stuff, and lots more!

I hope we'll see you there for sure! I do remember seeing you around at Gafilk, but I don't think we were introduced as such. Anyhow, HI!
