Look - I don't think any of my friends are stupid, but just in case you don't think of it, I am going to tell you all what I'd love to tell the dozen or so people who have called about this today. Only I'm going to tell you all much more politely that I'd like to tell them.

This is April 15th. This is the day your personal tax filing is DUE. If you haven't looked at your W2 until today to see if there are any gross idiocies on it, well, my sympathy is VERY limited. And no, I can't magically make it go away for you, or for any of your employees - if I could work magic, I'd be in a different line of business and making MUCH more money. Seriously.

(Like I said, I really don't expect this to be true of anyone who reads it - but gaaaaaaaaah.)

Dude. *provides you with the comfort drink of your choice*

The number of clueless out there is oftentimes deeply alarming to me, but we must go on. Thanks for being one of the clueful. :)

If not for the last minute......

IMNSHO, far too people wait until the 11th hour, or worse, the 11th hour and 59th minute to get their taxes done. What do they get for their troubles? A chance to get on the local news report while they stand in line at the post office. And they wear this last-minute tag as if it's some bizarre badge of honor! (Someone should throw up a screen subtitle in the bottom of the screen that says "Losers" while they pan through the queue of people waiting to mail it in. :-) )

I finished my taxes on March 31st. (Dad wastes no time and files them by February 15th.) I was hoping to have them done sooner, but there were some things beyond my control, like the hard drive crash, missing medical and daycare records, and a problem I had with ItsDeductible because I had an old video driver.

There is a form that people can fill out for an extension; I forgot the name or number of the form. And I don't think "Because I'm a slacker" is an acceptable excuse.

I had a CS "professor" (he was an ABD -- All But Dissertation -- hence the quotes) who had a saying for this situation: "You Get What You Deserve".

It's 23.15 and the name on my W2 is spelled wrong. It's not even my name or taxpayer ID number, actually...

Can you get me a new W2 before midnight?

Certainly, sir... step right this way while I get the lighter fluid and the matches.

But then, if we could all handle this stuff rationally, we wouldn't need you at all :-)

Personally, I thank heaven on a regular basis for the fact that most people are even more incompetent at what I do than I am.

That's a very good point! I don't feel all that technologically savvy myself, but the people I'm helping are largely even less so. Makes me look good, I guess - even if it does make me want to tear their hair out. *G*
