Well, it was a fun weekend and much too short. Let's see how much I can remember... and whether I can ever get this written on this rather busy Monday!
ACat had an errand Saturday morning that stretched out until early Saturday evening, but we still went to the Gafia filk that night. There were only a handful of people when we arrived - three more showed up later in the evening - but it was lots of fun, lots of talking and laughter, and lots of good music. ACat had entirely too much fun with the digital camera - http://www.autographedcat.com/gallery/housefilk0703
Sunday we had a late and lazy start, but eventually we got tired of sitting and decided to go out for a bit. Since breakfast had been nibbles and lunch hadn't happened, we went to Cheeseburger Cheeseburger and gorged on excellent cheeseburgers and the best onion rings and milkshakes I've had in years. We staggered back out and went sight seeing in Atlanta, mostly for my amusement.
One of the touristy things that ACat's been lauding to me since before I ever moved down is the view from the top of the Westin Plaza Hotel. They have a restaraunt/cocktail lounge with an amazing view of the city on the very top of this exceedingly tall, cylindrical hotel. The view is impressive - my first impression, standing right at the window, was that my plane was coming into the runway on final approach! The absolute icing on the cake is that the whole area that the tables are on, in both the restaraunt and above in the lounge, rotates! (Yes, I'm easily amused. Still, this was very cool.) We were told the lounge makes one complete rotation every half hour, and the restaraunt once every hour. There's also an observation area in a ring around the center which has signs orienting you to the direction you are facing (on the non-rotating outer wall, obviously), informational signs telling you which sights and sites are visible in which directions, and even telescopes! I was probably unreasonably entertained by all of this, but ACat seemed to enjoy my enjoyment, and since we had the option of paying a cover charge or ordering a drink, we each got a delicious strawberry daquari for a treat. I was further amused by reflecting on how singularly disorienting it would be to find your way out of a room where the floor was rotating, while drunk! (There are unusual challenges for the waitresses too, since your table will actually have moved by the time they bring the order to you. The center disk, where the bar actually is, does not rotate. The tables sit on a broad ring which does. The elevators, naturally, also stay stationary, as do the rest rooms. I'm sure drunken navigation is made much more entertaining by these as well!)Anyhow, ACat had entirely too much fun taking these photos, too, and posted the results at http://www.autographedcat.com/gallery/skylounge
So we eventually headed out and decided to court temptation with a stop at the comic book store on the way home. We took the scenic route (not quite by intent) and just kept passing by things to make us laugh and wonder! There were many nice houses to point out to eachother, but lots of odder stuff too. There must have been a few dozen life sized, bizarrely decorated cows scattered along the way. We finally saw a banner - The Cows Are Coming! - which suggested it was probably a promotion from the Chik-Fil-A restaraunt chain, and it was a very effective one! A few that stood out included one in blue camoflauge colors, one posed and done up as the Venus De Moolo (as ACat dubbbed it), one covered with travel stickers (with a luggage handle on its back!), one in a police uniform, and one covered in daisies! I also saw, in passing, a driveway which had been painted with a whole bouquetworth of enormous brilliant flowers like a mural turned into a carpet, and very well at that. We wandered a while, enjoying the adventure for itself, getting sillier and sillier (see the above quote) and touring through some very nice neighborhoods. We finally fetched up close to Eddie's Attic and ACat reoriented himself. We headed back to where we wanted to be, only to find that we were essentially paralleling the first half of the route - one block over! It was actually kinda fun pointing out the different buildings and businesses that we'd seen from the other side an hour or so ago. >:)
Once we arrived, we went a little nuts and we went home with a Bag of Loot - entirely too many graphic novels and games! So, we toddled on home (still overstuffed with that enormous lunch) and I spent the rest of the evening monopolizing the graphic novels. *G* Good stuff - tell me again why we have to waste time on sleep?
(Just to give an idea how busy it is here at work today - I started trying to write this over 6 hours ago!! I'm definitely hitting a record number of calls today... *sigh* If I get a moment to breathe, this would be a good time to ask about being hired permanently. >:))
