We get migrating geese around here, and sometimes they show up wandering around the roads in the damndest places. However, the half dozen big, brown birds strolling around in the parking lot when I came home from grocery shopping were NOT geese. I took a few cellphone photos and brought in the groceries to babble excitedly at ACat (while he was on the phone, unfortunately) and he dug out an actual camera for me. I went back out and stalked them a bit, snapping photos all the way. Sadly, I forgot to ask if his camera had a zoom function so they are fairly crap. I had a theory, though, and looked it up when I got home.

Evidently, a half dozen wild turkey hens had wandered up out of the woods to pay a visit. Ever so often, we get a reminder that this used to be country just a few years ago, and even now that it's pretty suburban, there's still a bit more surviving in pockets of woods than we really think about. It's kinda cool.

Edit: the photos weren't completely hopeless - ACat uploaded them, and they're a lot better on a bigger screen. The best are the last few.

Could be worse. My former boss had a run-in with a turkey vulture on a northern California mountain road.

They're not that uncommon in urban areas, as bercilakslady pointed out. They are unpredictably aggressive creatures, though, with quite functional beaks, so I'm glad you didn't get *too* close. They're also dumb, as in attacking their reflection on the side of a car (much to the chagrin of the car's owner).
