I saw this through [livejournal.com profile] browngirl and I don't know how many removes the person posting is from her, but, as [livejournal.com profile] darlas_mom says, this pushes my buttons.

http://darlas-mom.livejournal.com/259096.html

Darla, clearly a bright kid in a non-traditional family, got told by other kids at school that her family isn't REAL because it's not like other people's families. Her mom explained that there are a lot more kinds of family than Mom-Dad-Kids but Darla is a sceptical, hurt six year old, and demanded "Where are they?"

Darla's mom is making a book to answer that question.

"I want to ask for pictures of you with your actual families. Straights with kids, gays and lesbians with kids, single parents (both moms and dads), blended families, families of different ethnicities or multiple ethnicities. I want 'em all.

I know it's a huge...HUGE thing to ask. Particularly since I can't pay anyone (this isn't intended for publication, it's a gift for my daughter); at most, I can offer you a gratis copy of this run off at Kinko's, if you want one. (Anyone who wants one can have one--particularly if they have young children in their lives they want to give it to.) I'm actually terrified asking this, because it seems so huge. What could be more personal than something like that, and what reason do any of you have to give something like that of yourselves?

But I really don't have anyone else to ask...so I thought...well, I guess you can see what I thought. If you even so much as consider this, I can never thank you enough."

I know there are a lot of people on my friends list who have very non traditional families. Clearly she doesn't need any personal information to go with the photos for this, unless you want a copy of the book. Anyone out there who might be willing? I'm sure she'd love to hear from you.

My sister is generic Irish American. My brother in law is straight up Mexican from like Mexico. My nephew is a beautiful bright cafe au lait skinned angel. I will ask them for a photo :-)

*grin* Thank you for passing the word along.

And you're braver than I; I decided that I didn't want my good mood dampened by anyone who might have a problem with this project, so I turned comments off.

PS She's a LJ friend of a friend of mine.

Thanks you your entry. I've sent her a Comment asking if she'd accept a picture of what was my very traditional (in many ways *but one*) family.

I will see about getting her something. (Kip and I appear pretty average, aside from me being taller, but she says she wants traditional families too.)
