(What, precisely, is supposed to be the difference between a nerd and a geek, anyhow? Outside of a 10-for-1 circus freakshow, that is.)

A geek is someone who is heavily involved in a particular area of esoterica, to the point of using the jargon of that area in his or her daily life. The default type of geek is computer, default subtype software, avocation developer, but there are sysadmin geeks, hardware geeks, even history geeks who don't even have a BS but a BA. (UC Santa Cruz' definiton of a geek was simply someone who used the computer for social interaction. English majors and all.)

A nerd is someone with a high IQ but fewer social skills than a geek; his or her dress may not conform to social norms, either.

LJ, on the Bay of Angst? <sarcasm>No way!</sarcasm> :-D

I've always said that a geek is someone who bites the heads of disc drives while they're still spinning, but that's your circus freaks definition...

(And a good chance to actually use the new icon, thanks :-)
