I'm considering making a square for next year's Gafilk quilt with my best attempt at a replica of one of Dave's buttons and his filkhaven name on it. Does anyone have a reference book they would recommend to a complete newbie trying to do this? Thanks for any help...

I'm pretty sure that I have several quilt books that I'd be happy to loan you. I can show you quilting stuff if you need help. You could also cross-stitch or embroider the button designs and use that as your top piece. Let's talk...

That would be great. The lettering would probably be a lot easier (I'm guessing) with cross stitch or embroidery. Let me know when is good for you, or if we've got a concom meeting coming up, could do it then. Thank you!

The next time that [livejournal.com profile] autographedcat comes over to game, I'll send him home with the books.

I really like that idea.

It really seems appropriate, especially since he kept donating all the proceeds from his buttons to Interfilk and the quilt proceeds go there as well. I just hope I can make it look good.

Easiest way to do it would probably be applique for the design. I don't remember if Margaret had us actually quilt the squares to a backing or not.

The guidelines on the Gafilk site sound like yes.... so I'll follow those. They seem simple enough, the trickier part is getting the design I want to look good.

If you want cross stitch and if I can find a picture of the original, which I'm sure I have somewhere, I can dump it into my cross-stitch program and let you have a copy.

That would be a huge help! If you have a picture, wonderful, and if not I have a digital camera that I'm sure I can get you one with. Cross stitch sounds like the best way to get the details in, especially the lettering.

I have pictures of the original designs, found on his LJ. A lot of them are here in the archive for October 2004 (with the first lot back in the September archive). I did at least offer to make him a coaster, but can't now remember whether I ever did. I do have charts of the basic design - the note with the two F-holes - on either white or blue, but not the lettering, though that will be easy to add. Which would you prefer? They're about 48 stitches square.

On the white, please! And is the lettering something the program will let you add, or should I do that on my end?

I've sent an email to your LJ address - let me know if you need any changes! I've done basic lettering.

I just stumbled across these pages with variations of the artwork and explanations. These may or may not be the same as was in LiveJournal:

Rob has offered to archive the pages.
