So, we had a filk last night. Three people showed up. There was no music. Given how hard it's been over the past year and a half to get people to volunteer to host, and how hard it's been to get people to come to many of the ones that are hosted - do we need to try another model, folks? And does anyone have suggestions?

You could fix the economy and world craziness.....

That's my excuse anyway...

Otherwise some system that allows you to really see real time who is going to be there so you can decide if you want to have it or not... something that allows you and everyone to roll with life and be informed. A facebook page maybe...?

You may want to try moving from just a e-mail list to Meetup.com The photography group that I'm in has had very good success with that site. There are reminder e-mails that are automatically sent out and a built-in RSVP system which is great for getting an approximate headcount. From an administrative standpoint, once the site is set up (and that's pretty easy itself) it is a lot less work than trying to coordinate events through e-mail alone.

The problem Brian and I have had is that with everything we have going between our day jobs, the farm and the video business we need at least 2 months notice to be able to schedule anything.

My only excuse is that I was out of town last weekend picking up James & Jennifer on Friday and driving to South Carolina and back for Larry Kirby's filk on Saturday and Sunday, I did a turn-around to Atlanta this past Friday night for dinner with friends who were passing through, I drove Jennifer back to Statesboro today, I'm driving to Atlanta Tuesday for a meeting Tuesday and Wednesday, I'm flying out of Atlanta for England next Saturday, and I haven't finished my income taxes. I really did think about coming last night too, but I decided it wasn't possible.

Wish I could be there for your filks; sadly it's a bit too far to drive.

Darn it - I want my teleporter. *pouts*

Are you sure it wasn't just a bad day of the month for the usual suspects to make it? It would involve more effort, but asking in advance for suggestions as to when to hold it might get a better attendance.

Have GaFilk quarterly instead of annually.

The problem has

partially been that although I send out the electronic notices, very few people respond. Right now I have 3 people who have volunteered to host, and it's just a matter of arranging things.

I'm sorry, hon. That always sucks.

From other comments, it looks like there was a (relatively) local conflict, that being Larry Kirby's SC filk. Maybe next month will be better?

If I can find a host for April. I'm presently waiting to hear.

Plus, the SC filk was about 4 hours away by car.

In my case, the conflict was MidSouthCon ... I really really wanted to go, hate missing housefilks!!! (I did rsvp-no)

Not sure we will be able to do April, but I'm working on it (scheduling the final binge of contractor work on the house). If we do, it'll probably be the next-to-last-weekend.

Whenever you're willing and able to do it is absolutely fine with me. I'd like to have them more often, but it's dependent upon who has what available when (as in abode).

You were sorely missed, Robert. Any chance I can convince you to host another "heart of the filk"?

Farm? What farm? WHERE???

I'm not sure how to answer that. I let the host decide when to hold the filk once he/she/they say "I'm willing to host." It's not up to me; it has to be convenient for them. When I originally started the housefilks here back in 1997, I asked people when they'd be able to come (because I didn't have a life back then so almost any weekend was good for me) and set it up based on what I was told.
