So this morning I came out of the apartment, got in my car, and drove off to work. An odd clanking noise was immediately noticable from somewhere in the back right quarter area, but it's a short drive and nothing seemed in danger of falling off, so I figured I'd check it out when I got to work. Which I did.
Now, I know gas is more expensive than we've been used to in the US and getting more so. And I know I haven't filled my tank in quite some while (it's a small car, good mileage, and a short commute). And I know that if I heard the gas cap banging around on it's cable this morning, I certainly would have on my way home last night if it had been hanging out like that.
So last night someone in our lovely gated community apparently pried open the panel over the gas cap, opened the gas tank, and.... failed to get any gas out of it, considering I was almost out when I got home last night and had about the same when I left this morning. I'm sure of it, because when it gets low I keep a close eye on it, not especially wanting to have to leave my car somewhere and walk for gas.
Time to get a locking gas cap - tomorrow, given the storm we've got going right now. Anyone desperate enough to be out emptying gas tanks in this weather is desperate indeed. Good walls make good neighbors, and apparently so do good locks on your gas tank.
