I think they probably did it with a shotgun mic. I have always thought that "atomizer" is a word that should accompany a kaboom. An Earth-shattering kaboom.

It's probably also rather like learning a language. If you only learn one language, you tend to not hear the sounds in other languages that aren't in your own.
