Talk about your splinter audience...

Not everyone who reads this is a filker, and not everyone who reads this is a City of Heroes addict player, so I've stuck this behind the cut tag. Still, it's the first song I've written in a VERY long time (with feedback and polishing help from ACat!), and I kinda like it.

(ttto: Outward Bound)

“You’re rescuing some scientists,” my contact said one day.

Well, the only thing I hate more than Council is the Crey,

And it does mean lots of XP – I said “Get out of my way!”

And we’re all superheroes now!

I’ve had a toon on CoH since it was begun,

I’ve got an alt or two (or three or four) and we’re having fun!

I used to have a life, I think, but hey, I’ve got to run,

    Cause we’re all superheroes now!

I’ve got a dozen characters but I want even more,

A tank or two, a fire blaster, scrappers who can roar!

This game’s so damned addictive I don’t care about the score,

And we’re all superheroes now!

I’ve had a toon on CoH since it was begun,

I’ve got an alt or two (or five or six) and we’re having fun!

I used to have a life, I think, but hey, I’ve got to run,

    Cause we’re all superheroes now!

Civilians stop to thank us when we save them from our foes,

But they’ve got super powers that a hero never knows.

They walk right off tall buildings and the damage never shows!

Guess we’re all superheroes now!

I’ve had a toon on CoH since it was begun,

I’ve got an alt or two (or seven or eight) and we’re having fun!

I used to have a life, I think, but hey, I’ve got to run,

    Cause we’re all superheroes now!

I’ve got a ton of badges and I’ve maximized my debt,

I’ve turned the squid to sushi, and you ain’t seen nothing yet!

I’m gonna have the toughest build that anyone can get,

Since we’re all superheroes now!

I’ve had a toon on CoH since it was begun,

I’ve got an alt or two (or nine or ten) and we’re having fun!

I used to have a life, I think, but hey, I’ve got to run,

    Cause we’re all superheroes now!

From Founders Falls to Atlas Park, we jump, run, ‘port or fly,

Our capes flung out behind us as we pose against the sky.

We’ll tackle any villain, and we’ll never question why –

Cause we’re all superheroes now!

Looks good from here. :)

City of Heroes is a game that I am staying far away from, because I know that it would eat every remaining bit of "spare time" in my life...

Oh yes.... the acute stage of the infection has passed, but the low grade fever still crops up fairly regularly. *G*

Very cute. I'm not a CoH player, but I can certainly understand the appeal, and I think that's all that's necessary to understand.

It's quite a bit of fun. :)

"( Just how many people will actually go past the cut tag, I wonder? )"

a) I will! I will! I'll always check out a filk from you, even if I don't know doodly about its subject.

b) Uh, what's its title? CoH?

a) awww, thanks!

b) No idea - any suggestions?

I guessed CoH because it's in the same position in line 1 of the chorus as the original's title.

Eh.... but it's a boring title.

I really liked it and thought it was very fun - and I've never played (and know practically nothing about) City of Heroes.

Great Job :)!!

Thanks! :) (And now, I guess, you know a little more about it!)

I know nothing about CoH, but know enough about RPG's in general (and their rule glitches) that I was able to fill in the gaps and enjoy the song.

[identity profile] kitanzi.livejournal.com 2005-08-05 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, good - I'm very glad to hear that.

Ditto [livejournal.com profile] madfilkentist. Never played CoH, nor do I care to, but I've played enough other RPGs over the years to enjoy the words.

[identity profile] kitanzi.livejournal.com 2005-08-05 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! That's gratifying to know, that it's fun even for folks who don't know the game.

"Eh.... but it's a boring title."

Can't seem to get Reply to this to work up above, so...

Yeah, boring, and maybe obscure to those not into CoH. Second thought - "I've Had A Toon"?
Nice possibilities for misinterpretation, yah? :)

That's not a bad thought... I'll consider it. :) (On the whole, though, since I don't expect it to go anywhere but right here, I'm not worried about titling it.)

[identity profile] filkergem.livejournal.com 2005-08-05 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
As with several others, I've not played CoH, but the song is worth seeing anyway - thanks for sharing it with us.

Also, the tune is not by Cat or Callie - according to http://www.echoschildren.org/CDlyrics/OUTBOUND.HTML it's by one of the two most prolific composers ever, Trad. (I'd been trying to track down any evidence to the contrary, since that is what I believed it to be, as well, but haven't found anything more definitive.)

[identity profile] annonynous.livejournal.com 2005-08-05 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
According to the printout I have (from Echo's Children's web site, I think), it's to the
tune of "I've Got A Home In Beulahland". I think this is an old spiritual, so it is likely
by that most prolific of lyricists.

Ann O.

[identity profile] almeda.livejournal.com 2005-08-05 07:52 am (UTC)(link)
I've been told it's a Sacred Harp song, almost all of which are by Trad.

[identity profile] kitanzi.livejournal.com 2005-08-05 09:41 am (UTC)(link)
Well, yes, and the Echo's Children page credits it that way but I figured more people seeing this would recognize it as the Outward Bound tune than I've Got a Home in Beulah Land (traditional) which is how they have it. I'm sure they're quite accurate about that.

EQ, yes (no longer); CoH, no.

Congratulations on writing again!
